The Washington monument is not a phallic symbol.

Well okay..... maybe the Washington monument is a phallic symbol but in my latest commission I tried not to make it look like one.

I had a commission to make a tie tack with the Washington Monument on it for a first year history teacher.  Sounded easy enough until I started working on my designs for the piece.  Darn, it was hard to come up with something that didn't look like a giant..... you know what!

But, I think I did it.  I moved it off to the side.  Put the reflection pool in front and a few bushes off to the right to balance it.

Here is the design I was working from.  (Easy to make in it's big form.  Not so easy in the small form.  Where's the 30% shrinkage clay when you need it?)
Here's what I ended up with.

As usual, the picture doesn't do it justice.  Actually the photo does look a little like a ............, but it doesn't in reality.   (I hope!)

Hmmm, quite the challenge! It always amazes me how much harder commission pieces can be to make, compared to what I think they'll take when I agree to do them....

To me, the thing that "saves" the actual "monument" from the, ah, "comparison" you mention is that the monument has such sharp edges....

For this, did you consider extruding a long square for the monument, to keep the sharp edges? (Or, for viewing from an edge, extrude a triangle, such that the fourth corner "disappears" into the backing?) With a mini-pyramid added for the top?

Or did you really do something like that, and it's just that the photo here somehow smoothes out those edges?

Either way, I hope the recipient adores this piece as much as he does the person it honors.

The edges are much sharper on the actual piece and the top has a mini pyramid sanded into the top. As I said the picture doesn't do it justice.
